On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the Virginia House Committee on Courts of Justice voted via voice vote to continue HB886 — a bill to authorize medical aid in dying — to 2027. Combined with the state Senate’s Committee on Education and Health’s Feb. 5 vote not to advance a medical aid-in-dying bill (SB359), these votes effectively end our 2026 legislative session in Virginia.
On Friday, Feb. 6, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act, making the Empire State the 14th jurisdiction to authorize this end-of-life care option. Her signature follows passing floor votes held on Feb. 4 by the New York State Assembly and Senate (83-62 and 34-28, respectively) to approve amendments to the law.
